Average price
Average price = total cost ÷ total shares. Brokerage and taxes on each trade raise your real cost a little.
When you add to the same stock at different prices, your average price is what all your shares cost you per share. It is the price the stock has to cross for your whole holding to be in profit.
This calculator works it out across any number of lots, and shows your gain or loss at today’s price.
Average price = (shares₁ × price₁ + shares₂ × price₂ + …) ÷ total shares
Ravi has 100 shares at ₹250 and adds 50 at ₹220
Multiply each lot’s shares by its price, add those up, and divide by the total number of shares.
It lowers your average price, so the stock needs a smaller rise for you to break even. But your loss today is the same, and more of your money is now in that one stock.
Usually, though brokers often include charges in the cost, and some reset the average when shares move out of your account.
No. Capital gains tax matches shares first in, first out, so the earliest lot is treated as the first to go.
Results are estimates. Returns are assumed constant, rates and tax rules can change, and your actual numbers will differ. This is not financial or tax advice.
