GST (goods and services tax) is the tax added to most things sold in India. Since 22 September 2025 the main rates are 5%, 18% and 40%, with some items at nil and gold at 3%.
This calculator adds GST to a price, or takes it out of a price that already includes it, and splits it into CGST and SGST (within a state) or IGST (between states).
GST = price × rate ÷ 100; price before GST = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
A ₹10,000 item at 18% GST
Nil, 5%, 18% and 40%, since 22 September 2025, with 3% on gold, silver and jewellery. Most everyday goods are at 5% and most goods and services at 18%.
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate: at 18%, ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 before GST, so the GST is ₹1,800.
For a sale within a state, GST is split equally into central GST (CGST) and state GST (SGST). For a sale to another state, the whole amount is integrated GST (IGST).
